On this edition of Dr. James Dobson’s Family Talk, Roger Marsh welcomes best-selling author and Messianic rabbi Jonathan Cahn to discuss his new book, The Altar of Pergamon: The Mystery of the Dark Angel and the Future of the World. The conversation begins in the book of Revelation, where Jesus addresses the church at Pergamon and refers to the city as the place where “Satan’s throne” is located. Cahn examines the massive ancient altar associated with Pergamon and traces its excavation, removal from Asia Minor and reconstruction in Berlin during the rise of modern Germany. From there, Cahn presents his interpretation of a series of historical parallels involving the altar, the emergence of modern antisemitism, Germany’s growing occult movements and the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. He argues that behind the political and military events of history lies a spiritual dimension consistent with Scripture’s teaching about the struggle between good and evil. Cahn also discusses the Pergamon Altar’s reconstruction in Berlin, the use of architectural imagery resembling the altar at Nazi rallies and the horrific persecution of the Jewish people during the Holocaust. Throughout the conversation, he connects these events to biblical themes involving Israel, spiritual warfare and the destructive purposes of Satan. Roger and Jonathan also discuss Cahn’s personal connection to this history. Jonathan’s Jewish father grew up in Germany during Hitler’s rise and escaped as a child through the Kindertransport — a history that makes the subject deeply personal as well as theological for Cahn.
