Why do so many Christians believe deeply in Jesus Christ yet hesitate to speak openly about Him? On this edition of Dr. James Dobson’s Family Talk, Dr. Dobson sits down with attorney, law professor, broadcaster and bestselling author Hugh Hewitt to discuss Hewitt’s book The Embarrassed Believer: Reviving Christian Witness in an Age of Unbelief. Hewitt describes the “embarrassed believer” as the Christian who has passed up opportunities to share the Gospel because of fear — fear of ridicule, rejection, appearing intolerant, being called hypocritical or simply not knowing what to say. He argues that many believers have become comfortable practicing Christianity inside the church while remaining reluctant to carry the message of Christ into workplaces, schools, neighborhoods and everyday relationships. Dr. Dobson and Hewitt examine the cultural pressure Christians face when they affirm biblical claims of absolute truth, sin, salvation and eternity. They discuss why words such as Jesus, Savior and even hell can become increasingly difficult for believers to say publicly when the surrounding culture rejects the authority of Scripture. The conversation also turns to the Great Commission and the responsibility of ordinary Christians — not merely pastors and professional ministers — to tell others about Christ. Hewitt encourages business owners, parents, employees, neighbors and friends to recognize that sharing the Gospel is part of every believer’s calling. They also address the fear of being labeled a hypocrite. Hewitt argues that acknowledging personal sin does not invalidate the Gospel; rather, the Christian message begins with the recognition that everyone falls short and needs a Savior. Drawing from passages including Mark 8:38, Romans 1:16 and Matthew 5:14, Dr. Dobson and Hewitt challenge believers to consider whether the people around them actually know what they believe — and whether Christians are willing to risk discomfort, criticism or even personal loss in order to stand openly for Christ. Hewitt ultimately offers a simple challenge: begin the conversation. Speak honestly about Scripture. Invite someone to church or a Christian retreat. Ask a friend whether they have considered the claims of Jesus. Even a small act of courage can open the door to something eternal.
