God Makes Lemonade, Part 1: Trusting God Through Life’s Hardest Moments Jesus never promised His followers a life without trouble. In John 16:33, He tells His disciples that tribulation will come — but He also reminds them to take heart because He has overcome the world. On this edition of Family Talk, Dr. James Dobson sits down with longtime friends Don and Brenda Jacobson to explore what it means to trust God when circumstances seem frightening, painful and completely outside our control. Don recounts the harrowing story of accidentally shooting himself with a 12-gauge shotgun while hunting alone in rural Oregon. Seriously wounded and stranded for hours in cold, foggy conditions, Don prayed for help while Brenda and friends desperately searched for him. A remarkable series of circumstances eventually led rescuers to Don and placed him in the care of a physician uniquely equipped to treat his injuries. But as Part 1 ends, Don is still fighting for his life, and doctors warn Brenda that even if he survives, he may never walk again. Their story is a reminder that God’s faithfulness does not always mean hardship immediately disappears. Sometimes His work becomes visible only as the story unfolds.
