Can God bring something good out of circumstances that seem unbearably painful? On this edition of Family Talk, Dr. James Dobson continues his conversation with longtime friends Don and Brenda Jacobson about suffering, faith and their book God Makes Lemonade: True Stories That Sweeten and Inspire. Don picks up the story of the hunting accident that nearly took his life. After suffering devastating injuries and spending days in critical condition, he describes the medical treatment that helped save him and the sense that God was still directing his life even in the middle of uncertainty. That accident eventually changed the course of Don’s career, leading him away from physical labor and into Christian publishing, where he would later become the owner of Multnomah Publishers. The conversation broadens to the many stories collected in God Makes Lemonade—accounts of people walking through loss, discouragement and circumstances they never would have chosen. One especially moving story involves a single mother who had lost her job, her home and her hope. At the moment she was considering taking her own life, a simple handwritten message from her young son reminded her that she was deeply loved and still desperately needed. Dr. Dobson and the Jacobsons discuss why hurting people often do not need quick answers or easy quotations. Instead, they need people willing to enter into their pain, listen, love them and help them trust God one day at a time. Brenda also shares her heart for encouraging single mothers, many of whom carry enormous financial, emotional and practical burdens. The Jacobsons explain that royalties from their book support efforts to help widows, single moms and children through what they call the Lemonade Foundation. The message is ultimately one of hope: difficult circumstances are real, pain should never be minimized, and yet God can still bring purpose, compassion and unexpected blessing out of seasons that initially seem impossible to understand.
